Vacation to Porto, Portugal

Dom Luís I Bridge in Porto, Portugal

Picture
Enjoy fantastic city views using this fine old bridge and admire its intricate ironwork, reminiscent from the Eiffel Tower.
Stroll over the Dom Luís I Bridge towards the famous wine cellars of Nova de Gaia or board a speed boat to admire the dark iron structure from your water. Pause during the bridge for stunning views with the skyline on the old city. Watch boats glide beneath you.
One of six bridges in Porto, the Dom Luís I crosses the River Douro, connecting the location with the small municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. The bridge was created by German architect Teófilo Seyrig. When it was designed in 1876, it absolutely was the longest iron arch on earth. This is don't the case, even so the structure remains an impressive sight, measuring 1,296 feet (395 meters) from bank to bank.
Stand within the banks from the River Douro and admire the spectacular shape with the Dom Luís I Bridge from afar. Come here over a windless day and you'll see a reflection from the bridge in water, setting up a perfect oval. Look for the influence of Seyrig’s teacher, the French architect Gustav Eiffel, the bare ironwork in the design.

Step on top of the bridge to savor fantastic views on the city. Look for the giant shapes of several of Porto’s grandest buildings, like the Porto Cathedral and Torre do Clerigos. Relax for the grass within the water’s edge and observe as colorful fishing boats pass beneath the bridge’s iron curve.
Cross the bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia to uncover why the region has a history of excellent wine, including port, that can take its name on the city of Porto. Explore the cellars and sample some from the region’s famous products.
To read more about the other bridges in the town, have a river tour. These are run from boats that had been once accustomed to carry Porto’s wine cargoes.
An informative guide can tell you the history on the bridges along with riverside buildings you pass.

The Dom Luís I Bridge is at walking distance from the city center. Several bus and metro routes pass nearby or on the bridge itself.
