  • History & Economy
For an online country dominated by bone-dry deserts and arid mountains, Namibia incorporates a surprisingly different and complex history. Settled first by San Bushmen and after that by migrating African herders and farmers, European involvement only began inside late 1800s. A brief but influential episode under German colonial rule preceded 70 numerous years of South African control. Namibia's subsequent freedom struggle was set resistant to the backdrop on the Cold War plus it was only in 1990 which the country won its independence.
Home to significant deposits of metals, uranium and diamonds, the mining industry dominates Namibia's economy and accounts to get a quarter of the company's revenue although it is tourism which can be one of country's major employers, comprising 18% of total employment. Offshore gas deposits are going to be exploited within the future.
  • People & Culture
Twice the length of Germany but you will find only 2.2million people, Namibia provides the world's second-lowest population density. Most Namibians are Ovambos but significant minorities can be found and add some Herero in addition to San Bushmen, Germans and Afrikaners. The overwhelming majority consider themselves Christian though traditional beliefs still hold sway in rural areas.
English is Namibia's official language but German and Afrikaans speakers will see themselves understood over the country. Much of Namibia's modern culture is just like South Africa's though the country is where you can some of Africa's best rock art in addition to the traditional-living Himba people in the Kaokoveld who still adorn their in a blend of animal fat and natural pigments.
  • Landscape & Wildlife
Most of Namibia's population endures the relatively fertile central plateau however it's the Kalahari and Namib Desert environments comprise the country. Running all the way on the icy Atlantic Ocean, the red-sand Namib could be the world's oldest desert and home for the famous dunes of Sossusvlei. Open woodlands and grassy savannahs are definitely the main features with the more watered north, while extensive wetlands are found in the Caprivi Strip (newly renamed the Zambezi Region), an oddly section of Namibia left over on the colonial era.
Environmental protection is constitutionally guaranteed plus some 15% from the country is offered over to parks and reserves. Wildlife is prolific, even during Namibia's deserts where familiar species for instance elephant and lion have adapted to your demanding conditions, but it is the country's flagship Etosha National Park that delivers the nation's best game viewing. Home to the variety of both savannah and desert species, Etosha is extremely famous due to the floodlit waterholes and since a stronghold for endangered creatures including cheetah and black rhino.
Other wildlife highlights are the small but teeming Caprivi reserves that offer amazing birding and large elephant and buffalo herds along with the unique Waterberg, an isolated plateau filled with classic savannah animals.
