Inhambane (pronounced 'Inyambaan')
The experience:
Inhambane in Mozambique is surely an attractive city, steeped in the past and flanked by coconut palms and magnificent beaches. The architecture and atmosphere reflect an easy and exciting past stretching to the 11th century. Muslim and Persian traders visited here as did Vasco da Gama from the late 1500s. The port of Inhambane also later became a major centre for ivory and slave trade and also whaling. This area has become one with the few in southern Mozambique the location where the last remaining Dugong can be viewed.

This Mozambique city is concerning 469km (291 miles) from Maputo and from now on, visitors will see a busy centre through an airport and harbour together with banks, petrol stations, shops, markets and sidewalk cafés. Inhambane is found on a bay and visitors can engage in a drink on the harbour watching the dhows (local sailing boats) sail forward and backward to Maxixe (pronounced "Masheesh"). It is the main centre for stunning resorts and beaches nearby including Tofo and Barra. The dry winter season in southern Mozambique, lasting from from April to October, are fantastic times to check out when the temperatures are milder.
